Educational spaces such as classrooms, lecture theaters, and libraries are places where focus and concentration should be a top priority. However, they can also be busy environments that are full of distractions, and this can lead to worse outcomes for students and their teachers. That’s why many schools are now discovering the power of scent.

Ambient fragrances and education may not be a traditional combination, but the ability of fragrances to influence our mood has long been known. In fact, aromatherapy using essential oils first began around 3500 years BC. Evidence has been found of their use for medicinal and religious purposes in Ancient Egypt, India, and China.

What are essential oils?

Essential oils are derived from plant sources, including leaves, petals, bark, or roots. A process of distillation or cold pressing is used to extract essential compounds which have a highly concentrated aroma, and also contain medicinal properties. For example, some essential oils can kill fungi and bacteria, and repel dust mites and insects.

Each plant has a unique chemical composition and distinctive fragrance, and they can also be successfully combined to create new fragrances. Plants most commonly used for essential oils include lavender, rosemary, citrus plants, peppermint and cinnamon.

How can essential oils influence mood?

Certain essential oils are known to have a relaxing and calming effect. This can help to ease anxiety in the classroom at times of high stress, such as the build up to exams or assessments. Research has shown that young people’s mental health has been deteriorating over the past decade, and this was exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic.

School students are under more pressure than ever before, with high expectations from parents or caregivers and teachers, and anxiety around social media, climate change, and political polarization. This can adversely affect their ability to learn and focus at school.

Essential oils such as lavender are known to promote feelings of relaxation and calm. This can help students to concentrate and perform better in tests. Other fragrances can have an uplifting and energizing effect, such as citrus oils and cinnamon. This can stimulate learning and sharpen mental abilities, helping with memory and the processing of information.

Essential oils are 100% safe

Because they contain no harmful chemicals and harsh toxins, essential oils are very safe to use in the classroom environment. They may even help to create cleaner air and mitigate against respiratory infections, because many essential oils contain natural antibacterial and antifungal properties to improve air quality.

Teaching in an environment with a pleasant ambient fragrance can help to enhance the overall educational experience for everyone, boosting morale and attendance rates, and therefore leading to higher levels of attainment.
