A pet undoubtedly brings warmth and joy to a home, but unfortunately this is sometimes accompanied by a not so pleasant odor. Dogs in particular have their own smell, because they are constantly producing oils, sweat, and yeast, which combine to give off a pungent aroma which can be overpowering for humans.
If you do notice that your dog is more malodorous than usual, it is important to take them to the vet for a checkup. They may be suffering from a bacterial or fungal infection of the skin, or have a tooth or stomach infection. Your vet may recommend a different diet, or a new bathing and grooming routine to help your pet feel more comfortable.
However, sometimes the smell is just down to their own particular brand of doggy perfume, and there’s not much to be done about it. However, you don’t have to put up with an environment which doesn’t smell pleasant to humans. You and your family may have stopped noticing the smell, but you can bet that your visitors will!
Have a regular cleaning routine
It’s extra important to stick to a regular cleaning schedule to keep on top the spores and hairs that pets shed around the house. Vacuum all surfaces once a week at a minimum, including furniture and curtains as well as all types of flooring. Clean and change the filter on your vacuum on a regular basis as well.
Deal with soiled floors or furniture straight away
If your pet toilets in an inappropriate place in the house, it’s important to clean it up as soon as possible. Once a liquid soaks into carpet or furniture, it is very difficult to get rid of the lingering smell. First remove any solids with gloves and newspaper, and then place newspaper or kitchen towel on the wet area to soak up the excess liquid.
Next, dilute the area with a small amount of water and washing up liquid, and then rinse it thoroughly and blot dry. Don’t be tempted to rub it, as this will only drive the liquid further into the carpet fibers.
If the stain has already soaked in, you will probably need to use a commercial carpet cleaner to get rid of lasting odor.
Wash pet bedding frequently
Your pet’s bedding will quickly get whiffy, so it’s important to wash it often. Vacuum up the hairs first, and wash it according to the manufacturer’s instructions, separately from the rest of your laundry. Make sure you use a mild detergent that won’t irritate your pet’s skin, and rinse it thoroughly.
If the bed is not washable in the laundry, deodorize it with a sprinkling of baking soda, which is odorless but works to absorb smells.
Use an odor eliminating fragrance
To eliminate the last traces of odor from your home, you can install a pet safe scent diffuser. These release a pleasant fragrance, and work to neutralise bad smells. Look out for brands which are labelled as ‘pet safe’ because otherwise they may contain toxic chemicals which will be harmful to your pet.
