Retailers around the world are changing the way their customers shop, with mobile self-scanning technology beginning to take over the sector.

 

RBR predicts the number of stores that will allow their consumers to pay for goods on their mobiles while walking around the premises will treble over the next five years.

 

The Mobile Self-Scanning and Checkout-Free 2022 report revealed 10,000 more retailers began offering this service over the last year, taking the total number of stores with mobile self-scanning technology to 46,000.

 

One of the biggest investors last year was 7-Eleven, who introduced smartphone self-scanning to nearly 3,000 stores across the US in 2021.

 

Spanish fuel retailer Repsol also took on the technology, rolling it out in 600 of its outlets.

 

Alex Maple, leader of the study, said: “Mobile self-scanning is expected to expand strongly to a more diverse range of retailers and to new geographies.”

 

“Whether it is scanning items using a smartphone or a handheld retailer-provided device, reducing friction and enhancing the shopping experience remains a key aim,” it was added.

 

The firm predicted there will be considerable adoption of self-scanning applications in Asia and the Americas over the next few years, which will help boost the number of outlets offering this technology to 160,000 by 2027.

 

This could support the US retail sector even further, with recent statistics showing sales increased by one per cent in June, Reuters recently revealed.
